GM Partners With Samsung SDI To Create EV Battery JV & More
As the electric vehicle (EV) market expands, automakers are increasingly driven to secure cost-effective and more powerful batteries to stay competitive and maintain production plans. To this end, General Motors (GM) has taken significant steps to develop high-performance and affordable batteries, including a new partnership with leading battery manufacturer Samsung SDI.

What Is the General Motors and Samsung SDI Agreement About?
Samsung SDI recently announced through a press release that it has finalized an agreement with General Motors to form a joint venture to supply EV batteries in the United States. The two companies met multiple times in 2023 to discuss the partnership, reaching an agreement in April of that year. The agreement was officially signed at Samsung SDI's office in Seoul.
Under this partnership, both companies will invest approximately $3.5 billion. The joint venture will establish a new battery cell manufacturing plant on a 680-acre site in New Carlisle, Indiana, expected to generate over 1,600 jobs. The facility will initially have an annual production capacity of 27GWh, with plans to expand to 36GWh. The plant will produce high-performance nickel-rich prismatic batteries based on NCA technology for GM’s EVs, aiming to enhance driving range, energy density, and safety.

Mary Barra, GM's Chair and CEO, emphasized that the joint venture with Samsung SDI underscores GM’s commitment to innovation in America. She highlighted that the EV market and GM’s sales would continue to grow as more customers adopt EVs, the charging infrastructure improves, and GM expands its offerings.
Yoon-ho Choi, CEO of Samsung SDI, remarked that the partnership with GM, the leading automaker in North America, has led to the creation of a premium battery production hub to lead the US EV market. He also expressed Samsung SDI's commitment to supporting GM's leadership in the EV market through its advanced PRiMX battery products featuring "Super Gap" technology.
This partnership is part of GM’s broader strategy to enhance the power capabilities of its vehicles and assembly plants, which also includes a long-term agreement with NorthStar Clean Energy.
What Does the General Motors and NorthStar Clean Energy Deal Consist Of?
In addition to the Samsung SDI partnership, GM has signed a 15-year renewable energy purchase agreement with NorthStar Clean Energy for three of its assembly plants. NorthStar’s Newport Solar project in Arkansas will supply electricity to GM’s assembly plants in Michigan and Missouri, contributing to GM’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
Rob Threlkeld, GM’s Director of Global Energy Strategy, stated that this agreement marks a major step in reducing GM’s carbon footprint and advancing its sustainability goals. GM’s extensive renewable energy portfolio now includes agreements with 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states, making it the largest buyer of renewable power by capacity in the automotive industry.
